🎵 On side hustles & the streaming economy
Side hustles offer endless models for independent workers to earn (gig workers, creators, freelancers, resellers, renters, etc.) but creative workers are often bound to the platforms where their audiences live.
For musicians, that platform is Spotify (at 40% market share) and many artists are unhappy: the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) recently launched a campaign against Spotify, petitioning for greater artist payouts and increased transparency from the streaming giant, among other demands.
On Thursday, Spotify launched Loud&Clear, a site that aims “to increase transparency by sharing new data on the global streaming economy and breaking down the royalty system, the players, and the process.” In a parallel Twitter announcement, CEO Daniel Ek wrote that on Spotify, “fans will ultimately decide who thrives.”
But still, some artists are concerned with the murky algatorial (part algorithmic and part editorially curated) nature of Spotify’s playlists, alleging that the company holds more responsibility for determining which artists are successful than it admits.
Meanwhile, in the world of Web 3, platforms like Audius are making their own entrance.
